Australian values are based on freedom, respect, fairness and equality of opportunity. Australian laws apply to everyone in Australia, regardless of background or culture. Shared values help keep the community secure, prosperous and peaceful, and are a reason many people want to become citizens. Australian citizenship means living out these values in everyday life and in the local community, and all Australian people are expected to respect, share and uphold them.
