The citizenship pledge is made at the ceremony. In it, a person pledges that they will share Australia's democratic beliefs and respect Australia's rights and liberties.

Common mistakes
- Thinking the pledge commits a person to join a political party or hold office — it does not.
- Confusing this part of the pledge (democratic beliefs, rights and liberties) with the Part 1 pledge (loyalty to Australia and its people) or the Part 3 pledge (upholding and obeying the law).
